Essential

Essential: The First Five Years

The last year has certainly crystallized something we all knew instinctively:  Early Childhood Education and Care is ‘Essential’.

But why?

Healthy Kids.org.nz tells us that ‘In the first five years of life, your child’s brain develops more and faster than at any other time in his life.  Your child’s early experiences – his relationships and the things he sees, hears, touches, smells and tastes – stimulates his brain, creating millions of connections.’

Millions? Millions!  Early experiences, quite literally, are the architect of the brain.

Experts tell us that the brain is 90% formed by the age of 5.

This creates a huge responsibility (and privilege) for parents, responding to those early cues and talking to their babies, and exposing them to a kaleidoscope of experiences lived through the five senses.

It also means that you want the very best quality care for them – someone who will love them like their own - for those first care and education experience outside the home.

I say a hearty Thank you, Australian Government, for recognising and prioritising Early Childhood Education and Care during recent lockdowns.  Because brain development in the first five years never takes a day off!

We cannot underestimate the importance of an experience-rich early childhood.

This is why we do what we do, with expertise, love and conviction.
